PL-iP3/T Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting and Tips:

System turns on, but there is no video:

a) Shut down the PC, reseat the PL-iP3/T, FIRMLY insert it until it seats properly.

b) Use the FSB-100MHz or 133MHz jumper setting (according to your motherboard's FSB speed) on the PL-iP3/T instead of the default setting of auto.

c) Do NOT share the PL-iP3/T power connector with other devices. d) If you haven't upgraded your BIOS, please put the original CPU back in the system and upgrade the BIOS at this time. The PL-iP3/T supports SECC type and Universal Retention Mechanisms (URMs) directly, and the SEPP type retention mechanism by removing the PL-iP3/T's cartridge.

System lock's up more and more frequently:

Please make sure the heatsink is properly connected and the fan is working. It's required to use the Thermal Compound to improve the heat dissipation if overheating is suspected. We suggest that you read here, http://www.arcticsilver.com, for more details.

Locks up during loading of windows:

Frequent lockups in windows or a lockup during the loading of windows is most likely a driver error. To determine which driver is the problem, you must use what is called; "step-by-step confirmation". This is a way to load windows features one at a time. Press and hold F8 during boot-up to access this feature.  For Adobe Photoshop 5.5 (or later) crashes or freezes, Adobe suggests moving the Extensions Folder out of the Plug-Ins folder. See: www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/2256a.htm for more details

Locks-up during Post:

You may need to use more conservative BIOS settings for the main memory and Cache memory (i.e. change the CL=2 to CL=3, and load the Fail-Safe settings or BIOS Default Values option in the BIOS setup. For more information, please refer to the BIOS Guide from your system manufacturer.

System displays the incorrect speed:

If your BIOS can't detect and report the new CPU speed and type, or displays an error message during POST (but the system boots and operates normally), please just ignore it. The old BIOS was programmed long before the newer CPU became available. This won't affect the performance or compatibility at all. Please use the Powerleap InSPECS Utility to identify the new CPU. InSPECS Configurator

Windows freezes during intense CPU use:

Some systems may need a slightly higher voltage setting for stability. This will in no way impact the CPU. If you experience problems with freeze-ups or lock ups please set the voltage on the adapter to the alternative setting, below:

PL-IP3/T will not fit in retention mechanism on motherboard:

Some systems may have a retention mechanism (which holds the original CPU in place) that is not compatible with the IP3/T. If you encounter this problem, please purchase a Universal Retention Mechanism (URM). There is no need to remove the plastic shroud. A URM may be purchased at our online store, here.

Some motherboards may require a BIOS upgrade in order to work with the latest Pentium III and Celeron CPUs. For information about getting a BIOS upgrade for your computer system, start by visiting the motherboard manufacturer's web site.

If you've tried the suggestions above, but still Windows won't boot with PL-IP3/T installed, but when the original processor is re-insalled, it works fine:

Some customers who have Dell Dimension XPS-T systems had to remove the sound card physically and then replace it.  It seems there was an IRQ issue.  If you have tried all other tips, please follow the steps below:

Note: not all XPS-T systems will need to do this procedure.  Do this only if Windows fails to boot properly.

1. With old processor installed, update BIOS to latest version and download and store onto Hard Disk the latest Video, joystick and Sound card driver versions.

2. Use Add/Remove programs to remove all entries for Sound Blaster Live! software. Do not reboot the PC.

3. Power down PC and physically remove sound card.

4. Power up PC and check in Device Manager that there are no SB entries and no IRQ's assigned to the sound function.

5. Power down PC again and install the Powerleap upgrade.

6. Power up PC and check that it starts all the way to the desktop. Make sure there are no issues in the Device Manager.

7. Power down PC and add sound card. Do NOT put it in the PCI slot next to the AGP (to avoid IRQ sharing with the video card).

8. Power up PC and block the loading of the default drivers for the new hardware.

9. Reload all the Creative SB software from the CD, then update to the latest drivers. Check everything works ok.

10. Power down PC, power up again and re-confirm correct operation.

The objective of the above procedure is to get the IRQ's re-assigned by physically removing the sound card (even though it may go back into the same PCI slot as before).
